Two 18-year-old young men drowned in the Ayeyarwady River near Makhanti jetty in Kyat Paung Chan Ward, Myitkyina Township, Kachin State, according to reports.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 4, when the two youths were bathing in the river and suddenly went missing after drowning.
Members of the Myo Set Thit social rescue team later recovered the bodies of both victims.
“Around midday yesterday, one body was found. This morning, the second one was recovered. They were very young, it’s heartbreaking. Because witnesses quickly reported the incident, the bodies could be retrieved,” said a local resident from Kyat Paung Chan Ward.
The two deceased youths were residents of Rampu Ward. Their bodies were transported from Myitkyina General Hospital back to their homes.
“One of them was San Win Swe, and the other was his friend. Funeral arrangements are already underway. When we first heard the news, it was hard to believe. This is a time when everyone needs to be careful wherever they go and whatever they do,” said another resident from Rampu Ward.
Previously, on April 21 and April 29, separate drowning incidents also occurred in the Ayeyarwady River near Hoka Village and Naung Hee Village in Waingmaw Township, where a child and an adult male lost their lives.
