Chinese cyber scam syndicates are increasingly relocating their operations into military territories actively patrolled by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), the armed wing of the Karen National Union (KNU) and its allied forces, according to interviews with small business operators inside the scam networks.
Karen ceasefire armed groups, which previously permitted these operations along the immediate Thai-Myanmar border, are now facilitating the relocation of these massive scam hubs. To evade scrutiny, the syndicates are rebuilding their operations in remote, densely forested areas on the eastern side of the Dawna Range.
According to an informed source, approximately five new scam compounds have recently been constructed in these remote areas. These include locations south of Myawaddy within KNU Brigade 6 territory, and north of Myawaddy within KNU Brigade 7 territory.
Despite moving deep into the jungle, the logistics for these scam operations remain uninterrupted. Essential supplies, including operational equipment and food, are seamlessly transported through checkpoints controlled by Karen armed groups based in Myawaddy, Shwe Kokko, Kyauk Khat, and Payathonsu.
While the relocated syndicates continue their illegal activities in the forests, the military junta has limited its response to aerial surveillance using reconnaissance aircraft and UAV drones. The junta has launched zero airstrikes or ground clearance operations against the scam hubs. Furthermore, there have been no reported military clashes or territorial disputes between the scam operators and the KNLA joint forces so far.
On July 31, the military junta accused the KNLA of accepting bribes to protect these scam operations. In response, the KNU issued a firm clarification, stating that the scam hubs are entirely owned and operated by top leaders of the junta-allied Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and Border Guard Force (BGF). The KNU also publicly urged international governments to cooperate directly with on-ground organizations to eradicate these cyber scam syndicates once and for all.
