Activists Call for Nationwide ‘Rose Movement’ and Hunger Strike to Mark Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Birthday

The People Movement Platform has urged the public to join a nationwide campaign called “ROSE Movement: Roses of Hope” on June 19 to mark the birthday of imprisoned civilian leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Depending on local security conditions, people are encouraged to participate either on the ground by holding roses during protests, or online by sharing photos on social media of themselves wearing roses, offering flowers at shrines, or exchanging them with others.

Simultaneously, the “Proof of Life” campaign has called on people inside Myanmar and across the globe to support a hunger strike in London, which demands proof that the detained leader is still alive.

Deep anxieties persist over her well-being, as the Myanmar military has kept her in solitary confinement, denied her family visits, and completely cut her off from the outside world for over five years.

In London, Burmese diaspora members will stage a 24-hour hunger strike in front of the military embassy from 3:00 PM on June 18 to 3:00 PM on June 19. Organizers have invited supporters to join the strike or physically attend the protest to show solidarity if health reasons prevent them from fasting.

Alongside the hunger strike, Myanmar citizens at home and abroad are taking part in solidarity acts, including 81-kilometer cycling, walking, and running challenges.

“People around the world who love Amay [Mother] Suu are showing their devotion through whatever means they can. We hope for her immediate release from wrongful detention so she can fulfill her wishes for the country in good health,” said U Myint Aung, a member of the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society (Hpa-an), who completed an 81-kilometer ride in Mae Sot, Thailand. “I rode 81 kilometers to honor her 81st birthday and send her my love.”

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris (Ko Htein Lin), has also called on the global Myanmar community to join the “81 for 81 campaign” as part of the Global Proof of Life Challenge, demanding the military prove his mother is still alive.
