Military junta troops advancing along the Myeik-Dawei highway in Thayetchaung Township, Tanintharyi Region, shot and killed a local woman, according to sources close to her family.
The incident occurred this morning, September 8, after local resistance forces conducted a landmine attack on a military column marching between Thayet Hnit Khwa and Thin Kyun villages.
Following the ambush, a second military column following closely behind entered the village and began firing their weapons randomly in retaliation, a source close to the victim’s family told PRM.
“They just entered the village and started shooting because their advance unit was attacked earlier. The aunt was running down from her house when they shot her from behind,” the source explained.
The victim, 50-year-old Daw Yin Myint, died after sustaining a bullet wound to her back fired by the junta troops.
Daw Yin Myint lived with her family in Thayet Hnit Khwa village. At the time of the fatal shooting, she was fleeing while carrying her grandchild. Fortunately, the grandchild was unharmed. Her funeral is scheduled to be held tomorrow, September 9.
Despite the ongoing sounds of gunfire around the village, residents have not yet been able to flee the area, according to a local resident.
“As far as we can contact them, everyone is still trapped inside the village. They said the clashes are still ongoing,” the resident noted.
PRM has reached out to several local resistance groups for further details regarding the landmine attack and the current battle situation, but has not yet received a response.
Local resistance forces frequently ambush junta columns advancing along the Myeik-Dawei highway, causing heavy casualties for the military. In retaliation for these losses, junta troops routinely raid nearby villages, arbitrarily arresting and killing locals, as well as abducting civilians to use as human shields.
