A residential area in Ye Township, Mon State, reportedly came under an airstrike by the military, according to local residents.
The incident occurred in Chaung Hna Khwa village, located in the Ye Chaung Phyar region, where houses built with assistance from Japan’s Nippon Foundation were targeted.
The airstrike took place at around 1 a.m. on June 18, when two 500-pound bombs were dropped on the housing area.
Residents stated that there was no active fighting at the time of the attack, and the bombs were dropped without warning.
One local described the explosion as extremely loud and unlike anything they had previously experienced, noting that the bombs landed near the edge of the village rather than directly in the center.
As a result of the attack, six houses constructed with Nippon Foundation support were damaged, and a Mon national primary school was also hit.
Despite the destruction, there were no reported casualties or injuries among civilians.
The area is under the control of the New Mon State Party (NMSP), which has previously signed a ceasefire agreement with the military.
The housing project had been built around 2019 as part of humanitarian assistance provided by the Nippon Foundation.
While the military has not officially explained the reason for the airstrike, pro-military media claimed it targeted the area due to suspected presence of resistance forces, including PDF Battalion 33.
Local residents have reportedly fled the village out of fear of further attacks, with only a small number of people remaining.
