According to the Khin-U Township True News Information Team, over 30,000 civilians across 19 villages in the western part of Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region, are suffering from a severe flooding crisis.
Local residents from 19 villages located along the Mu River were forced to evacuate their temporary shelters on the night of August 6. Tragically, a woman in her 60s died due to a lack of oxygen during the emergency evacuation.
“Currently, people are taking shelter in farm huts and monasteries. The elderly woman who passed away was an underlying patient who required an oxygen supply. She died during the rescue effort when the floodwaters rushed in,” said an official from the information team.
The victims from these 19 villages are internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were already sheltering in nearby areas because they did not dare return to their original homes, which had been burned down by the military junta.
Their cultivated paddy fields, betel leaf farms, and other agricultural crops, which they relied on for survival while displaced have been completely submerged and destroyed by the floods. Currently, the victims are surviving solely by sharing whatever limited food they have left with one another.
As they seek refuge from the floodwaters, finding safe shelter remains extremely difficult, particularly for the elderly, women, and children. With several people falling ill, there is a desperate need for food and medical supplies.
The 19 affected villages in western Khin-U Township include Ta Taing, Zee Taw, Let Pan Kwat, Thet Pay, Mu Thar, Ywar Thit, Thet Thar Pan Taung (Car Seik), In Taing (South and North), Thayet Pin Su, Ywar Thit Kone, Inn Pat, Aung Chan Thar, Ma Kyee Oke, Yar Taw, Myin Daung, Kyun Taw Lay (Uyin), Kyun Taw Gyi, Thar Wut Hti, and Mon Hla.
