Stray Bullets from Myanmar Clash Hit Thai School, Prompting Emergency Closure and Heightened Border Security

24 June, 2026

Fighting between Myanmar military forces and KNLA allied troops near Myawaddy, along the Thai-Myanmar border, has resulted in stray bullets crossing into Thai territory. Gunfire from the Min Let Pan village area struck a high school in Mae Ku Khing village, near Mae Sot, causing damage to the school building and windows.

Due to the incident, Thai authorities ordered the emergency closure of the school on the morning of June 22, prioritizing the safety of students and teachers. Reports indicate that no casualties occurred at the school, but the situation raised serious safety concerns.

Thai officials and military forces have since increased security along the border, closely monitoring the situation. The escalation follows repeated incidents in which cross-border impacts from the conflict have affected Thai soil.

Over nearly seven months of ongoing clashes, heavy weapons and drone attacks by Myanmar military forces have occasionally landed inside Thailand. These incidents have caused injuries and deaths among Myanmar migrant workers, as well as damage to homes and injuries to some Thai civilians.

Despite continuous offensives using airstrikes, artillery, and drones in areas such as Min Let Pan and Hpa Lu villages, Myanmar military forces have not successfully gained full control. In response to the continued instability, Thai authorities have declared heightened alert conditions along the border and are maintaining a state of military readiness.
