Continuous heavy rain in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, has caused the Uru Stream to overflow, flooding several villages and residential areas.
Since June 6, persistent downpours have continued up to today, sending water into low-lying neighborhoods including Lone Khin Village, Myoma Ward, and Nga Pyaw Taw Ward.
A resident of Myoma Ward told Manau Voice: “Water is coming into houses. We don’t know when the rain will stop. It feels like bad luck keeps bringing more water. Low-lying places are seeing more intrusion. Even today, there are still heavy showers.”
After the intense rainfall and subsequent flooding, people in Hpakant are facing difficulties traveling. Villagers have urged authorities to reopen the Yuma–Seikmu road, which has been closed for nearly eight months.
A local from Seikmu village said: “The Ma Mone ferry gate is no longer crossing because of high water. The Spaw ferry gate is still operating, but vehicles must wait in long lines. Officials should open the road for the people.”
Hpakant faces annual flooding during the monsoon. This year, in addition to flood damage, fighting has led to road closures and worsened the hardships for local residents.
