Within a span of just four days, from August 28 to September 1, up to six men have been arbitrarily arrested and falsely accused in the Inle region of Nyaungshwe Township, Southern Shan State, according to locals close to the Nanpan territorial police station.
On August 30, within the Inle Hotel Zone, a joint patrol of pro-junta Pyusawhti militia and ward administrators spotted eight men climbing a utility pole to steal electrical wires. The patrol opened fire and managed to apprehend four of the suspects.
A local source close to the Nanpan police station reported that the four arrested thieves were falsely labeled as individuals associated with the People’s Defense Force (PDF). They are reportedly being transferred from the Nanpan police station to Nyaungshwe, and will ultimately be sent to the Eastern Command (Ya Pa Kha) interrogation center in Taunggyi.
“They were held at Nanpan for one night and then sent to Nyaungshwe. Since they are just thieves, there is no one to negotiate for them. Because actual political cases are rare in Inle right now, they perfectly fit the quota for false accusations,” the source explained.
Similarly, on August 28, a joint column of military junta troops and Pyusawhti militia raided Thabyaypin village and arrested 40 year old U Tun Oo. He was accused of having PDF ties and was taken directly to the Taunggyi interrogation center.
Locals report that this military column is currently stationed at U Daung Taung and its foothill villages, continuing to search for and arrest revolutionary activists.
Furthermore, on August 25, a 25 year old man named Maung Pyae Sone from Kyant Pone Nge village in the Maing Thauk village tract was arrested on alleged PDF affiliations. Sources close to him say his family has not been able to contact him since.
Reports indicate that in 2026, the military council is planning to host a sham “PDF Surrender Ceremony” in the Inle region. To incentivize this, they have announced a massive reward of 100 million Kyats each for two local Pyusawhti leaders.
Because of this bounty, mothers of draft-eligible men are expressing deep anxiety, fearing that arbitrary arrests and false accusations against local civilians will only increase.
Revolutionary sources have also issued a warning to local activists, advising them to remain highly vigilant, as the junta column stationed at U Daung Taung could potentially advance towards the villages on the eastern shore along the Inle Lake circular road.
