Mae Sot — August 6
Thai military and security forces, who have been stepping up border security on the Mae Sot side of the Thai-Myanmar border, have arrested six Chinese nationals for illegal border crossing after they reportedly fled from a cyber scam syndicate in Myawaddy.
The arrests were made at 6:00 AM on August 5. While patrolling along the Moei River, a joint force comprising the Tak Provincial Police Investigation Division, Border Patrol Police Region 5, and Royal Thai Army Ranger Regiment 1411 intercepted the Chinese nationals as they crossed from Myawaddy into a forest edge area in the Mae Pa sub-district of Mae Sot.
According to local authorities, the arrested Chinese nationals could not produce any documents proving legal entry or permission to reside in Thailand. Consequently, they will face legal action for illegal entry and residency in the country.
During the arrest and interrogation process, authorities recorded photographs and audio in strict compliance with Thailand’s Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the Mae Sot Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Currently, Thai police and security agencies have intensified 24-hour patrols along the Myawaddy-Mae Sot border to deter and intercept illegal border crossings, human smuggling, and other transnational crimes.
