Thai Schools Relocated and Military Security Boosted Amid Fierce Myanmar Border Clashes

MAE SOT, THAILAND — Fierce fighting has erupted between the Myanmar military junta and allied Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) forces in Min Lat Pan, a Myanmar village situated directly across the border from Mae Ko Ken in Thailand’s Mae Sot district.
In response to the intense cross-border conflict, Thai authorities stepped up security around local schools starting on the morning of July 9. To guarantee the safety of students and teachers from stray gunfire, classes have been temporarily moved to safer, reinforced locations.
The temporary learning arrangements have been divided to keep the children safe and organized. Preschool and kindergarten classes have been relocated to the Mae Ko Ken Child Development Center. Meanwhile, primary and middle school students are now attending their classes inside the grounds of the local Buddhist monastery and the village community hall.
Following urgent orders from the Mae Sot District Chief, a heavy joint security operation is currently underway. Local administrative teams, the Thai military’s Ratchamanu Task Force, border guard units, and local village security volunteers are actively guarding the empty schools and patrolling the Mae Ko Ken area to protect Thai citizens from the spillover of the Myanmar war.
